Get your Freekeh on - Stuffed Squid

With the onset of warmer weather in New York, all I'm craving is seafood. Wandering around the farmers market on a balmy afternoon, I decided to buy a few random ingredients and take a 'ready, steady, cook' approach to dinner.

Birthday Banquet

I've been blessed for the last year living with a girl who loves to eat, and will eat anything I put infront of her. So for her birthday I decided that instead of going out for dinner, we should have a dinner party at home. So we squeezed 15 people into our tiny apartment for her birthday feast.

Peanut Butter & Jellyfish

What I am about to offer here is not a seafood book review, restaurant review or a recipe. It is the brief tale of my strange weekend that includes all three, and my subsequent realization that my salmon feasts must become a quarterly treat as I try to aim lower in the food chain to sustain myself.

Black Chicken Confit with Tangerine Marmalade

Growing up we always had pet chickens. We had one special one particular called Timmy- a silkie bantom who never quite fit in with the group. Not only is he special because of his mad-scientist look, but he is special because unlike your everyday roast chickens found at your local butcher & supemarkets, silkie bantoms have black skin and black flesh.

Bizarre Food at Food Bazaar

There are some things about American Supermarkets that still baffle me. How can it be easier to buy a pigs’ hoof than desiccated coconut? Why are deodorants, hair spray and face wash kept behind locked cabinets? Where they sell whole octopus, baby sharks and clams but not almond milk?

Pig in a Day

Pig in a Day

I've never butchered a pig before, but have always wanted to. So needless to say was very excited about the first day of school this term.. it was the first day of our charcuterie class and our first chance to break down a whole pig. Be warned, images are not for the faint hearted, or animal loving.

Zesty Orange Cream Biscuits by Sarah Lutkenhaus

Sarah is designer and illustrator currently residing in Brooklyn (via Kansas). In her work, she is interested in making ideas tangible and telling stories. She plays a mean guitar and can bleach a denim shirt better than Bon Jovi in the 90's.

This illustration of Orange Creams captures sense of quirky style and story telling perfectly.

O! Canada my hearts skips a beat

With the return of my winter coats, opaque stockings and woolen socks, my craving returns for hot, home cooked, comfort food.  And there's no food in the world that satisfies the 'wanting to eat a cuddle' craving more than Poutine.

Hunger Games at Googa Mooga

Written by Maxine Thompson, Karina Seljak on Tuesday, 22 May 2012.

Usually festivals are associated with dancing, drinking, eating occassionally, music, friends and generally lots of movements and being active, with minimal focus on food. The first Googa Mooga festival, held in NYC's Prospect Park on Saturday and Sunday, was exactly the opposite. A festival with 120% focus on the food and -20% on movement.

Charlie & The Mast Brothers Chocolate Factory

If ‘chocolate factory’ conjures up images of Wonka’s waterfall then you aren’t far off the truth – the pouring and whirling of chocolate is a key part of the process. I discovered this recently, when I was lucky to visit the Mast Brothers testing room and factory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Sunday Feast: Cod, black olive & semi-dried tomato papillote with Pistachio & artichoke heart tabbouli

Sunday's are the best day of the week to spend all morning flicking through cookbooks and food magazines and all afternoon pottering about it in the kitchen preparing the feast for that night.
