Soul Food at Amy Ruths, Harlem

Visiting Harlem we knew that some southern soul food needed to be on the menu. Not being able to get into Red Rooster (book well ahead if you’re planning to go) we opted for other local hotspot Amy Ruth's.

We were happy to be served up warm, fluffy cornbread in baskets while we tried to talk ourselves into ordering chicken and waffles. It didn’t happen. I kind of regret it, as I feel like we should have at least tried it, but it seemed like a pretty unappetising flavour/ texture combination and intimidatingly beige.

We opted for jerk chicken with collard greens and buttered corn. The jerk chicken was nice and spicy and juicy, the collard greens good and buttery, as was the buttery sweet corn - YUM. We followed this up with a piping hot cuppa and a fat slice of red velvet cake... moist, fudgey and spongey with dangerous cream cheese icing. Hearty and satisfying.
