Living in the ghetto has a lot of benefits, getting called beautiful 5 times in 3 blocks, being able to cook paella for 10 for under $50, liquors stores open past 10pm on weeknights, and getting a vegetable juice at 3am.
The 'Kiwi Market' (located just under the Myrtle Broadway JMZ stop) is one of those places that locals would not survive without. As well as having a vast selection organic fruit and vegetable, important chocolates, beers, whole grains and spreads, they also have a juice bar.
In the city, a large juice will set you back at least $5. Not at the Kiwi market! A large juice (the only size available) is $3. And the best part is that the $3 gets you 1.5 juices. Instead of pouring the excess away, they make you drink the juice until there is enough room in your cup for the excess juice, when they top is back up.
Nor do they skimp on ingredients. A standard juice, lets say, beet, carrot, apple and ginger will contain, 1 giant beetroot, 2 apples, up to 6 carrots and a big wedge of ginger- you couldn't buy the ingredients that go into the juice for $3!
They have 3 boards with pre-set secltions, or you can mix and match and form your own flavour combinations (be warned, some are better than others).
Some popular combinations
- beet, carrot, apple, ginger= great morning starter
- pineapple, apple, beet = nice balance of fruit + vege
- pineapple, apple & orange = tropical heaven!
- beet, cucucmber, carrot ginger= good if you are getting a cold!
It is suggested to add at least 1 fruit element to your vegetable juice to take the edge of the earthiness of it, but hey.. if you're feeling it, add wheatgrass instead of pineapple and embrace life.
Here's a little video of the juice making in action....
