Food News: The Hearts Kitchen
Whenever we think of what not to eat when pregnant, a few things instantly spring to mind... no alcohol, no smoking, no raw fish, shrimp, no eggs.
Searching 'Pregnancy diets' in google brings up hundreds of sites listing what to eat and what not to eat from various (dubious) sources, and beyond naturopaths, midwives and a few specialised doctors, there is yet to be a resource that provides expectant mothers with detailed nutritional information about what to eat and when.
Insert Mollie Dickson and Jennifer Bryman of The Hearts Kitchen. A cooking concept that aims to reduce heart disease, obesity and cancers by improving the nutrition of expectant mothers, providing them with the knowledge, motivation and support to cook whole foods and sustain a healthy lifestyle.
The Hearts Kitchen was born out of the large increase of Chronic Disease in America over the past decade and drastic increase of obesity in the last 20 years. This is due to the lack of time, money, knowledge and access to select and prepare healthy food.
Heart disease is the number one killer in America and it starts with the womb. Most of the risk for acquiring heart disease, obesity, diabetes and cancers is set before birth. Research and development in the origins of heart disease has discovered that the nutrition a baby receives in its first 2 years of life is the number one indication of health and risk for disease in later life.
This is because a fetus develops its vital organs, muscle and bones in the womb and because the gene patters that regulate disease predispositions are set in early life. The mother’s body composition and the food she eats during pregnancy directly impacts the baby’s quality of development.
Heart's Kitchen provides women with recipes packed with nutritional value, but satisfy those intense hormanal cravings. Their recipes provide the perfect balance of neccessary vitimans and minerals a developing fetus (and expectant mother) require.
On their website you will also find information for leading heart and disease foundations, details about up & coming events and fundraisers, and Q&A's for new and expectant mothers. Currenly The Hearts Kitchen is based in Portland, but are working on extending their outreach and spreading their research, knowledge, skills, recipes and wisdom to mother's across the globe. Spread the word.
