Soul Food at Amy Ruths, Harlem

Visiting Harlem we knew that some southern soul food needed to be on the menu. Not being able to get into Red Rooster (book well ahead if you’re planning to go) we opted for other local hotspot Amy Ruth's.

Limbering up at Lupe's, NYC

With a big night of dancing ahead of us, we thought it the perfect opportunity to fuel ourselves with the power of mexican food and margaritas and finally try the food at Lupe's.

1or8 Japanese, Brooklyn. Eat there now.

This place had been on Maxie’s hit list after coming here just for dessert and having her mind blown with the white Sesame Tart with black sesame ice cream and shiso Flan with umeboshi sorbet, and I take no convincing to eat Japanese.

Jack's Wife Freda, New York

With friends visiting from Chicago and me visiting from Australia, Saturday morning meant a breakfast out in NYC. Maxie and I had walked past cute and cosy looking Jack's Wife Freda (224 Lafayette street, New York, NY 10009) on a recent stroll and noted it as somewhere to visit. We would definitely come back!

Cereal Milk White Russian at Milk Bar, Brooklyn

In a recent wander around Williamsburg on a chilly afternoon Maxie and I were lured in by the neon lights, warmth and promise of interesting beverages at David Chang's Milk Bar.

Goal Setting

Here at The Bookery Cook, we are all about setting and achieving goals. We thought that the new year is the perfect time to set ourselves some gastromonic goals.

Amainezing

On the weekend of the 09/12 (or 12/09 in USA) 1/3 of the Bookery Cook was fortunate enough to venture to Linchonville Maine to celebrate the 30th birthday of fellow food lover and good friend Miss Aimee Hunter (Anatomy of Food) at one of the most beautiful and delectable properties to date, Salt Water Farm.

Outpost: Art from the Streets

A recent trip to Sydney luckily coincided with the Outpost: Art from the Streets exhibition on Cockatoo Island. 150 local and international artists (including 6 Bookery Cook artists! Vexta, Beastman, Ears, Max Berry, Numskull & Drew Funk) jazzed up the Island and its industrial spaces with an assortment of paintings and installations.

Beautiful Bountiful Brooklyn Tasting Hour and Slideluck Potshow Saturday

...Say that quickly ten times after drinking 3 beers! Thats what I attempted to do last night! Saturday the 14th of May was the 2nd annual Beautiful Bountiful Brooklyn Tasting Hour and the 16th Slideluck PotShow.

Never the Same (bar twice)

Since I arrived in New York I haven’t eaten at the same place twice, you’d be crazy to because on every corner there is yet another cute looking place or dimly light bar. However, upon signing a lease for our DREAM apartment on Grand St in Tribeca, we celebrated by visiting not one, but two of our topped ranked eating establishments for the 2nd time.

Drowning blissfully in the sea of food

Excuse the lack of blog posting for the past few days- I’ve barely had time to sit down. So this blog is going to be an ambush of culinary experiences to date!

NYC is the city that never sleeps and hence neither have I. We have spent the days trekking around Manhattan looking for a place to live- seen some very interesting things, showers in cupboards, cupboards for bedrooms… but nothing we feel happy with calling home.

Bookery in Byron

Whilst 1/3 of the BC team is eating and drinking her way around Japan, 1/3 decided to shake off the post-assessment blues and head to Byron Bay for a romantic getaway with 3 girlfriends. Not much was on the agenda for the next 48hrs except eating, wining, sleeping, eating, swimming, eating, beering, swimming, eating.

In March one portion of the Bookery Cook cook took a trip to enjoy the cultural and culinary delights of Melbourne, and check out the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

Beach food

After a night out boozing and dancing to Quantic at The Step Inn and getting home at 3am, there are not many things that will get you out of bed at 6am. Double Island Point is one of them.

Bookery Cook Eats Sydney

A few weeks ago entailed a trip to Sydney to watch Bookery Cook favourite DubleE play at a rave underneath the M4. Other than a good dance, it was also the perfect excuse to dine out every meal for ‘research purposes’.

The Chelsea

The Chelsea

The Chelsea is the type of place you go for breakfast and next thing you know it’s a couple of hours later and you’re ordering a crisp glass of white and bowl of mussels with crusty bread.

Scoring trip to Fremantle for work meant the opportunity to explore some of the offerings of this coastal Western Australian town that is known for its food/ drink/ coffee/ art scene.

Earwax Cafe

Earwax Cafe

A brief stint in Chicago in August meant a new culinary experience. Some notable features include candied nuts in salad, blue cheese dressing, waiters nearly falling over when you ask for a meal that doesn’t involve meat, and lots of iced tea.

Breakfast at Grub & Tucker

Breakfast at Grub & Tucker

A ravenous appetite saw a swift decision for breakfast whilst in Sydney recently. Luckily, this decision made in haste was for the best.
